Trouble in midfield mire: HSV dramatically ends victory series

Trouble in the midfield mire
HSV ends the winning streak dramatically

Hamburger SV starts against SV Sandhausen like the fire brigade, but the ball just doesn’t want to get into the goal. Even a penalty only helps for a while – but there’s still the 96th minute.

Hamburger SV has ended its lean period of four games without a win in the 2nd Bundesliga. The North Germans won 2-1 (0-0) against SV Sandhausen on Saturday evening and climbed from tenth place to eighth place in the table.

The hosts scored the redeeming goal by Moritz Heyer in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Previously, in front of 17,950 spectators in the Volksparkstadion, David Kinsombi from the penalty spot (74th minute) and Sandhauser Janik Bachmann (87th) were outnumbered. His teammate Marcel Ritzmaier had seen the yellow-red card (73rd) because of a complaint.

The HSV burned off an offensive fireworks at the start of the game and worked out chance after chance. The opening goal seemed only a matter of minutes. But Robert Glatzel (6th), Heyer (9th), Manuel Wintzheimer (10th, 18th, 25th), Tim Leibold (12th) and Jonas Meffert (50th) failed. SVS goalkeeper Patrick Drewes also showed a strong performance.

The lack of success in front of the rival’s goal robbed the hamburgers of their vigor. At the end of the first half, the endurance runners at the hosts became calmer, which gave the sand houses a break. That didn’t change after the change of sides. The hosts’ share of ball possession increased to 72 percent – but there were hardly any compelling opportunities.

Only a foul by Erik Zenga on Sonny Kittel, which led to the penalty, made the opening goal possible. But the sometimes indisposed defense of HSV made it possible for the guests to score 1: 1. When hardly anyone believed in a Hamburg victory anymore, Heyer struck the ball in the net.
