“True Detective: Night Country”: plot

As an anthology series, “True Detective” has always dealt with a different case with new characters in the previous 3 seasons. In previous seasons, the investigators often found themselves delving into the dark past of victims and potential perpetrators. New clues shed light on the unsolved, dark murder cases that the investigators couldn’t let go of.

Season 4 takes place in Alaska at the time of the “Long Night”, because here the sun no longer rises for up to three months in winter. In the new episodes, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) not only have to face this darkness, but also the one they carry within themselves.

At the Tsalal Arctic research station in Ennis, Alaska, eight men have disappeared without a trace and only mysterious clues point to their whereabouts. Now the unlikely pair of investigators must get together and together bring to the surface the cursed truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

“True Detective: Night Country”: Cast

The new investigator duo for season 4 has been confirmed: Hollywood star Jodie Foster will play the role of Detective Liz Danvers. Boxer and indie actress Kali Reis (“Catch the Fair One”) will play Detective Evangeline Navarro.

Other actors and actresses include Fiona Shaw (“Killing Eve”, “Harry Potter”), Finn Bennett (“The Nevers”), Isabella Star Lablanc (“Cemetery of Cuddly Toys: Bloodlines”), Aka Niviâna (“Borgen”), Anna Lambe (“Trickster”), Joel D. Montgrand (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”), Christopher Eccleston (“Doctor Who”) and John Hawkes (“The Peanut Butter Falcon”).

The first season, starring Matthew McConaughey (“Interstellar”) and Woody Harrelson, was a hit with critics and viewers and won a total of five Emmys. Season 2, starring Colin Farrell (“The North Water”), Vince Vaughn (“F Is for Family”) and Rachel McAdams, was perceived as a disappointment.

“True Detective” last aired in 2019 with Season 3, which starred Mahershala Ali (“Marvel’s Luke Cage”) and Stephen Dorff.

“True Detective: Night Country”: Production

The online magazine Deadline reports that season 4 of the dark crime series will bring some changes. After series creator Nic Pizzolatto had some ideas for a sequel after the end of the third season, he left the project to work with McConaughey again on “Redeemer”, the production of which was stopped by the broadcaster FX.

So Pizzolatto is not involved in the production of season 4. Instead, the station is relying on Mexican director Issa López, who had already directed “True Detective,” for “Night Country.” López will also serve as a writer and executive producer. Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (“The Underground Railroad,” “Moonlight”) is another executive producer on board.
