Tuning bullet – Cupra Formentor VZ5 ABT: performance shower at the ring

His grace to race and enjoy four-wheeled merrymaking, to have fun downright. Is that a sin? In times like these even a particularly difficult one? An expensive one anyway, because when Abt in Kempten lifts the cowl from the Cupra Formentor VZ5, his five-cylinder has been boosted by 60 to 450 hp and the offering box is filled accordingly. We sent him to the Red Bull Ring instead of the Way of the Cross, which showed that he can’t be the devil because he doesn’t fear the holy water.

Yes, what else should it have been for, for which the heavens opened the floodgates, just as we set foot on the Eileige Land in Styria and started the engines? It wasn’t enough for a deluge, but it was enough for one or the other quick prayer if you slowed down a curve with a little too much trust in God. But whether it’s thanks to God, the driving skills or the perfectly balanced Formentor, everything always worked out. The Cupra Formentor VZ5 tuned by Abt ensures that the latter at least appears to be true. In German: It’s easy to drive. And you have to be very stupid to lose your way fundamentally, especially if you leave the systems activated. And it’s amazing how little they intervene, even on wash-soaked asphalt, when you’re driving clean. A little too fast into the corner, then the celestial chariot pushes outwards on all wheels, is quick to catch again and put on the path of virtue. Hosianna!Formentor also as a wishbone If speed and lap times are not important, but above all transverse travel, you quickly cut all lines and activate the drift mode. Then the Spanish cleric willingly swings his rump as the all-wheel drive puts more power to the rear, and particularly to the outside rear wheel, to allow for a neat drift. That’s where it ends with the “simply waddling”, but now and then a hallelujah escapes. But in view of the noticeable turbo lag, the fast ring ride is certainly more fun than drifting. The hardware of the vehicle is also designed for this, even the brakes withstand the fast course without going to your knees too early. And the increased engine power tears you out of the curves, so that you can rejoice when you have downshifted far enough or let the finely programmed dual-clutch transmission do the work. It’s 450 hp and 530 instead of 480 Nm. It goes from the starting line to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (series: 4.2 seconds). Back to the original in a jiffy It’s interesting how Abt achieves the increase in performance: Of course it’s done electronically, but not by reprogramming the engine electronics. Instead, an additional control unit is connected to the production control unit. Advantage: The factory software is completely retained and should an electronic problem occur, the source can be quickly identified by unplugging the Abt device. Whether you leave it at the standard top speed of 250 km/h when ordering the VZ5-Abt or 500 euros top it off to have 270 km/h in the registration – at the Red Bull Ring it makes no difference because you can’t reach either of them. There is too much uphill between curves 1 and 3. But you can invest your money in a follow-up guarantee, for example. And/or in Extras. There are different Abt complete wheels for up to 6700 euros, which are then 21-inch wheels. Or sports stabilizers around 1400 euros. And you’re sure to find one or the other desirable thing in Kempten. But you also have to add the not boring basic VZ5, which is in the list from a good 80,000 euros. Even more exclusive is the special edition in taiga gray, limited to 999 pieces worldwide and particularly well equipped, from 85,550 euros. Power for the four-cylinder tooIf you want the most powerful Formentor possible, but can’t or don’t want to afford the five-cylinder, you can also order a power upgrade for the four-cylinder from Abt. The top model here is the VZ 2.0 TSI with 310 hp and all-wheel drive, which Abt has boosted to 370 hp and from 400 to 450 Nm (sprint: 4.6 instead of 4.9 seconds). In terms of performance, you are almost at the standard five-cylinder without spending nearly as much money on it. Cost almost 3000 euros. Additional horsepower is also available for the other petrol engines. “Fahrzit” The VZ5 with “Abtdate”, i.e. Abt update, is the ultimate in the Cupra range and a veritable athlete. The investment pays off. You get a lot of extra power from the tuning company for manageable money, especially for the weaker engines. Of course, given the climate crisis, you have to reckon with purgatory. But Abt knows all about fire: The tuning workshop actually started out as a farrier and forged the iron while it was still hot.
