Spencer and Hill fight brutal big game hunters in Africa
The cousins Tom (Bud Spencer), called the hippopotamus, and Slim (Terance Hill), called the crocodile, both have a heart for animals. Tom drives tourists and big game hunters through the African savannah in his bus and replaces their rifle bullets with blank cartridges. Slim shoots his tires every now and then, but he also wants to save the animals. Together the two hunt down the unscrupulous speculator Ormond, who wants to turn the wildlife park into a tourist center with shooting galleries. They take on his gang of thugs and try to prevent the project.

Bud Spencer and Terence Hill were the most popular actor-film couple when it came to western comedies in 17 films from 1967 to 1994. The buddy movies with the famous two-handed double cheek whistle are absolute classics and “The Crocodile and His Hippo” (1979) is the 13th film by Spencer and Hill.
The breakthrough of the two came with “The Right and the Left Hand of the Devil” (original title: “Lo chiamavano Trinità”, 1970) and the sequel “Four Fists for an Alleluia” (“Continuavano a chiamarlo Trinità”, 1971). With around twelve million viewers, this brawling western is one of the most successful films ever to be shown in German cinemas.
“The Crocodile and His Hippo” is one of the more popular Spencer/Hill films and won the “Golden Screen” in 1980. The film is also the only one that was shot entirely in Africa. It was shot near Johannesburg and the animal scenes were shot in a park near Pretoria.
Bud Spencer and Terance Hill as cult figures
Bud Spencer’s real name was Carlo Pedersoli. Terence Hill (real name Mario Girotti) also chose his acting name from a list of made-up names that director Giuseppe Colizzi is said to have given him. Carlo Pedersoli’s pseudonym is based on two things he was particularly fond of: the beer Budweiser and actor Spencer Tracy.
