After a first phase of testing, Twitter
seems satisfied with its “down vote” function.

A new, more massive deployment is underway.

“Votes” on Twitter, Reddit style

A few months ago, Twitter was testing a new feature with a limited panel of users. It was a voting function aimed essentially at bringing up in a discussion the most relevant answers. A function which is now deployed on a larger scale, but which is still at the experimental stage.

It is largely inspired of course by what we find on other platforms, starting with Reddit. The deployment is underway on the side of the web version of Twitter, and soon on iOS and Android.

The objective of this new function is multiple, namely to allow a relevant answer to be more visible to users, and on the contrary, to drop into the depths of the discussion answers deemed useless, even offensive. ” This experiment also revealed that downvoting is the most common way people use to flag content they don’t want to see. “, explains Twitter.

According to the blue bird network, this voting function aims to significantly improve the quality of conversations on Twitter, by relegating uninteresting or unsuitable responses as far as possible. Once the new test phase is complete, this new functionality should therefore be permanently integrated into the social network.

For The Verge, if this voting system allows users to quickly provide feedback to the platform, it can also lead to various abuses. For example, votes can be used in targeted harassment campaigns, and if incorporated into Twitter’s algorithm, they could be used to silence dissenting opinions, among other things.

In your opinion, the “downvote” on Twitter, good or bad idea?
