Two-factor authentication on Discord: How to set it up

The free one Discord communication tool has been offering gamers the opportunity to communicate with each other since 2015. With its many options such as chats as well as voice and video conferences, it competes with many other providers, such as TeamSpeak. Discord is no longer only used by gamers. Discord offers you two-factor authentication (2FA) for this, with which you can make the login more secure.

Setting up 2FA on Discord: Here’s how

If you activate two-factor authentication, you need a code to log in in addition to your conventional password. To get this, you need one of two apps that you have to choose during setup. This is how you do it:

  • go to yoursettings‘ (gear icon on the bottom left of your name).
  • You end up at “My Account”, where you can already set up the 2FA.
  • Click on the button “Enable two-factor authentication“.
  • A pop-up window will open.
  • You now have to decide whether you want to use Google Authenticator or Authy.
  • Download the respective app and follow the further instructions on Discord.

Once you have completed this process, a new pop-up window will appear: On the one hand, you will be offered your to deposit phone number. This sets up an additional backup in case you lose your backup codes or no longer have access to the app. On the other hand, you can place yours there Download backup codes and save it safely. You need them if you can’t call up the normal codes for 2FA in an emergency. But you can catch up on that later. To do this, simply go back to “My Account” in your settings.

Set up 2FA for Discord on your smartphone

Since you can also use Discord on your smartphone, you have the option of setting up two-factor authentication. This works in a similar way to a laptop or PC. Again, you have to go into the settings. Activation will continue or start automatically if you have downloaded one of the apps.

Set up 2FA for a server

You can set up servers for free via Discord and use different channels, for example. You can also increase security for this. in the Server settings menu can be found under “moderation‘ the ability to request 2FA server-wide. This has the following consequence: All members of your server who have administrator rights must set up 2FA, otherwise they cannot work as admins.
