Two men arrested for stealing 1.5 tonnes of potatoes which they resold on Le Bon Coin: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

On August 1, 2023, two farmers near Guînes, a French commune located in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region, were very surprised. While working in their fields, they realized that they were missing… potatoes and onions. But where have they gone? They then went to the Guînes gendarmerie to file a complaint. An operation repeated on September 2, 2023 during which the farmers once again claimed to have been victims of theft. In the columns of The voice of the North, Wednesday October 4, 2023, Vincent Riffault, commander of the Calais gendarmerie company, explained that an investigation has been opened. Neighborhood investigations and searches carried out on social networks made it possible to identify two of the suspects. he declared, then specifying that the thieves acted on social networks. In fact, these are two men who resold their loot to individuals in Calais via Facebook and Le Bon Coin. An initiative which made it possible to find them.

Two men arrested thanks to social networks

On Facebook and The good corner, both men hoped to make a lot of money. For this, they sold the fruit of their theft for 1 euro per kilo on average. The media specifies that they stole 130 kg of potatoes, 26 kg of onions and around thirty packaging nets. Damage which is 2,500 euros per victim. For his part, Vincent Riffault explained that the thieves were arrested and they admitted the facts. “Placed in police custody, the two men, who act independently, admitted to having stolen, for one, approximately a ton of potatoes and 90 kg of onions and for the second half a ton of potatoes , during the summer period”, he confided. The Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor’s office took over, asking that the two men be summoned before the judicial court on May 29, 2024. They will be tried for the various thefts and face up to three years in prison and a fine of €45,000.
