Ubisoft still hasn’t figured out that no one wants to play a game on the blockchain

Ubisoft has just announced a brand new game: Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles, a tactical RPG focused on PVP. If the title does not really seem to stand out, one of its features attracts attention. He indeed wants to exploit the blockchain, but do players really want to get involved in such a project in 2023?

NFTs, blockchain, web3… these are terms that whet the appetite of video game studios, who see in this a still untapped financial windfall. However, these technologies arouse the rejection of many players. That does not prevent Ubisoft from being stubborn.

The French publisher unveiled its new baby: Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles. No gameplay shown, but a simple teaser for what is described as a tactical RPG betting on PVP. Planned for PC, it has an amazing particularity, since it wants to exploit the blockchain.

Ubisoft unveils its first blockchain-based game

No details on the use of technology in the game itself. We just know that Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles will operate Oasys, a blockchain network dedicated to developers working in video games already pushed by publishers like Square-Enix or Sega. In any case, we suspect that all this will not be beneficial for the players, whose purse is obviously targeted. As a reminder, the blockchain is a technology that makes it possible to decentralize and anonymize the data stored there. It is used in particular for cryptocurrency transactions, as well as for the sale of NFT. Needless to say, all this scares the players, who only see a certain opportunism on the part of the studios.

This is not the first time that Ubisoft has tried to exploit these technologies in its games. The French firm had once launched Quartz, an NFT exchange platform. After the disastrous reception by the public, the studio had abandoned the idea, while indicating that it did not intend to exclude these technologies in future projects. Champions Tactics Grimoria Chronicles is one of them. One can easily imagine that in the game, unique items could be exploited in the form of NFTs, but nothing is confirmed for the moment.

It remains to be seen which public could be seduced by a game exploiting the blockchain, if such a project is not condemned even before its release. With the bad reputation of NFTs, a market that has also collapsed in recent months, success would be a matter of miracles.
