PARIS (Reuters) – Member countries of the European Union (EU) have agreed on new sanctions after Russia invaded Ukraine, targeting in particular oligarchs, the maritime sector and three banks Belarusians, the French presidency of the EU announced on Wednesday.

These new measures will be formally adopted by the Heads of State and Government of the 27 during the European Council on Thursday and Friday in Versailles.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, told the European Parliament that the new sanctions package declared persona non grata in the Union around 100 Russians belonging to different levels of power in Moscow, whose assets will also be frozen.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen explained that the sanctions also target the export of Russian maritime navigation technology.

France, for its part, clarified that the sanctions clarified certain points concerning cryptocurrencies in order to prevent them from being used to circumvent the sanctions aimed at Russia.

The new sanctions were adopted at a meeting of COREPER II, which brings together the permanent representatives of member countries to the EU, on the eve of the Versailles summit.
