The Pope’s special envoy was shot at in a war zone in Ukraine on Saturday. But he and his fellow travelers are unharmed remained, reported the Polish Cardinal Konrad Krajewski on Saturday evening in an interview with “Vatican News”.
The head of the Vatican’s emergency relief agency said he was traveling near the town of Zaporizhia with a Catholic and a Protestant bishop and a Ukrainian soldier. With a minibus they would have brought supplies to the front area – into a “no man’s land” that normally “no one but the soldiers enters anymore” because of the heavy shelling.

After the shots, however, they could have continued their tour and distributed the rest of the relief supplies. The cardinal added that it was the ninth anniversary of his episcopal ordination and not just because of that a very special day for him. The incident strengthened his conviction that “we can only pray and repeat: Jesus, I trust in you.” Krajewski is in Ukraine on behalf of Pope Francis for the fourth time since the beginning of the war. The cardinal should show the suffering people the papal closeness in this situation, which only brings “destruction and death”, it said.
