KHARKIV, Ukraine (Reuters) – The Ukrainian city of Kharkiv suffered intense Russian bombing on Sunday a few hours before the start of the new year, announced the Kyiv authorities, who had launched several missiles the day before at Belgorod, a locality under control Russian.

At least six missiles hit Kharkiv, the country’s second city, announced Governor Oleh Syniehubov, who gave a provisional toll of 28 injured and accused the Russian army of having targeted residential buildings, hotels and medical centers.

“On the eve of the New Year, the Russians want to intimidate our city, but we are not afraid, we are unshakable and invincible,” commented Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv.

The Ukrainian Air Force says it destroyed 21 of 49 projectiles launched overnight by Russia. Most of them targeted the front line and the regions of Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhia, she said.

These attacks occurred the day after the bombing of Belgorod, a town held by Russian forces who accuse the Ukrainian army of having targeted the civilian population indiscriminately, and of having killed at least 22 people.
