KYIV (Reuters) – Several Ukrainian diplomatic representations around the world have received “bloody packages” containing animal eyes, Ukraine’s foreign ministry said on Friday.

These incidents follow the sending of a series of letter bombs to Spain, including one intended for the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid.

The packets, soaked in a liquid with a characteristic color and smell, were sent to the embassies of Ukraine in Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia and Italy, to the general consulates in Naples and Krakow and at the consulate in Brno, Czech Republic, ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko detailed in a statement on Facebook.

The embassy in Madrid was also the recipient of such a letter, the foreign ministry later said.

“We are trying to understand the meaning of this message,” said Oleg Nikolenko, adding that Foreign Minister Dmitro Kouleba ordered that all Ukrainian diplomatic representations be placed under heightened security.

The Ukrainian embassy in the United States has also received a letter containing an article criticizing Ukraine, added Oleg Nikolenko.

Most of the letters came from the same European country, he said, without specifying which one.

Human waste was also found in front of the door of the residence of the Ukrainian ambassador to the Vatican, we learned from a diplomatic source in Rome.
