The annual summit to open the UN General Assembly began in New York on Tuesday. The meeting at the headquarters of the world organization provides the big stage for heads of state and government like Alain Berset. The outgoing Federal President obviously always felt comfortable in an international atmosphere during his time in office. In an interview with SRF, the Freiburg resident talks about one of his last international appearances and what could happen next.
SRF News: Switzerland can currently boast success as a mediator between Iran and the USA. When will this happen with Ukraine and Russia?
Alain Berset: Conditions need to be met so that we can move forward. Switzerland is always ready to make its contribution and help. But this also requires the will of the different parties.
Switzerland has no hidden agenda and is considered trustworthy.
Our mediation worked with the USA and Iran; it shows that certain movements are possible. As far as Russia’s aggression in Ukraine is concerned, it must be clearly stated that the conditions are currently not met to act as a mediator here.
What place does Switzerland have in the world today?
Switzerland has a strong place in the world and is known for its commitment to peace. We have a strong platform in international Geneva. Over the last 12 years, I have always been impressed by how Switzerland has acted as a fair mediator and partner. The country has no hidden agenda and is considered trustworthy. However, the whole thing is extremely fragile in a world that is constantly changing. Here in New York I sense a high level of credibility for Switzerland.
Was there also criticism of Switzerland, keyword weapons deliveries?
The topic came up primarily in bilateral discussions. There I explained Switzerland’s position in each case. There were differences in each case, but we treated each other with respect.
These moments were brutal, I gave it my all and I’m happy to have an empty agenda at the beginning of 2024.
The countries also understand that Switzerland can play a slightly different role in this conflict.
Do you feel a certain sadness about leaving after 12 years?
As chairman of social affairs, health and culture, occasions like this are rather rare. As a Federal Councilor, my appearances were limited to Switzerland. With the two presidencies in 2018 and 2023, there was a good opportunity to slip into a different role again.
What does your future look like?
I need rest now. One example of many: In these twelve years there were 29 popular initiatives. It’s hard to imagine what that means. These moments were brutal, I gave it my all and I’m happy to have an empty agenda at the beginning of 2024.
