UN urges world to protect women

Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary-general, said on Sunday that "many women and girls are particularly vulnerable to violence precisely where they should be protected. In their own homes."

A global appeal to protect women and girls "at home", this is what the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has just launched.
"Violence is not confined to the battlefield ", he said in a press release and a video in English with French, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese and Russian subtitles, recalling his recent call for a cease-fire in all theaters of war to better fight against disease.

It is true that since the beginning of the confinement caused by Covid-19, domestic and family violence has increased.

"Unfortunately, many women and girls find themselves particularly vulnerable to violence precisely where they should be protected. In their own homes. This is why I appeal today for new peace. at home, in homes, around the world (…) In recent weeks, as economic and social pressures have worsened and fear has set in, the world has experienced a horrific outbreak of domestic violence. ( …) I urge all governments to take measures to prevent violence against women and to provide remedies for victims as part of their national action plan against Covid-19 ", said l 'man.

Antonio Guterres claims that justice continues to prosecute the culprits, and he notably asked for the establishment of "semergency alert systems in pharmacies and grocery stores ", the only brands to remain open in many countries. It is necessary "ensuring that women can seek help safely, without those who mistreat them being aware of it, " he insisted.

Protect again and again

According to the UN, which says that it is not able at this stage to quantify the number of women or girls undergoing family violence in the world as a result of confinement, one in three women experiences violence during their lifetime. Today, with the pandemic, many women are trapped in their homes with their attackers and the phenomenon can affect all countries, note the United Nations.

The latter consider that violence against women is likely to take more complex forms: exposure to the coronavirus used as a threat, women evicted from their homes with no place to go, police and justice overwhelmed and making priorities. .
The organization thus urges governments to continue to provide shelters for abused women and to keep this file in their definition of essential services.
