Unboxing GeForce RTX 4090: our Founders Edition card from every angle… while waiting for the test!

A monster of power is looming on the horizon: impossible to tell you about it in detail, but we can already make the presentations.

Thursday, September 29, 2022. The UPS courier has a cumbersome package for us, but above all heavy, given its volume. We had been warned by NVIDIA: the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition has arrived.

An “original” box that opens elegantly: NVIDIA leaves nothing to chance with such a product. The most observant will have noticed the weight on the UPS label: 7 kg, the GeForce RTX 4090 is a beautiful baby!

Out of its box, the box of the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition takes up the canons of design from NVIDIA: simplicity, sobriety and elegance. Here we perceive the marketing influence of the Apple company.

A rocker system allows you to really open the box of the graphics card, and if the card itself seems imposing, it is immediately the fan that seems “disproportionate”. Even without knowing that it is a 120 mm, we feel like a change of category.

Near the PCI Express expansion slot, about which there is nothing special to say, we notice the usual NVIDIA signatures: the brand affixes its name and the name of the product.

Bulky, the GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition therefore occupies three PCI Express slots in the PC. The heatsink is imposing and made up of many fins, some of which surround the famous 12VHPWR power connector.

Just to realize the size of the spearhead of the RTX 4000 range, we placed the RTX 4090 Founders Edition next to our RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition, already a beautiful 28 cm long beast.

With its 30.5 cm, the RTX 4090 Founders Edition is still a little longer, but it is of course the occupation of three PCIe slots that is most impressive. As such, the newcomer is however no more bulky than the RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition.

In the table above, you can find all the technical specifications of the RTX 4090 Founders Edition compared to those of this RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition: it seems to improve almost every point while reducing heat.

As you can imagine, we will be keen to check all of this. But for our answers and our complete test, we will have to wait until the NVIDIA embargo is lifted: Tuesday, October 11 at 3 p.m. sharp… Well, if we don’t encounter any problems by then!
