Amazon is biting its fingers to fire Christian Smalls in the spring of 2020. When the Covid-19 pandemic overwhelms New York, the JFK8 warehouse, located on Staten Island, becomes the lifeline for millions of residents cloistered at home . Sanitary conditions are grim, forcing Amazon’s 8,000 employees and delivery workers to work without basic protection, without a mask or disinfectant, and with little or no break to achieve high daily performance goals. This situation triggers a spontaneous social movement, quickly suppressed. Christian Smalls is fired immediately. But he is not discouraged and undertakes to mobilize those who remain, camping in front of the sorting center, organizing barbecues and federating goodwill.

From these quiet efforts was born the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), which won an unexpected victory in early April despite efforts by local and national officials to nip in the bud…
