A rare case of bird flu has been reported in a human in the UK. “The person was infected through very close and regular contact with a large number of infected birds,” said the UKHSA health authority on Thursday. The patient “is currently doing well and remains in the isolation ward”.
Low risk for people
The UK has had the worst avian flu outbreak ever since November. Around 500,000 birds had to be culled. Avian flu is transmitted by migratory birds, most of which come from Russia or Eastern Europe. According to the WHO, the death rate in humans is around 53 percent.
The risk to the public is “very low,” said the UKHSA. The transmission of bird flu to humans is very rare and has only occurred a few times in Great Britain. However, humans should not touch sick or dead birds.
