JACKSON, Wyoming (Reuters) – Representative Liz Cheney, a critic of Donald Trump who played a leading role in the House committee that investigated the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, bowed on Tuesday to a candidate backed by the former president in a Republican primary in Wyoming, according to projections by Edison Research.
Liz Cheney’s loss to Harriet Hageman is a major victory for Donald Trump in his campaign to defeat Republican lawmakers who voted last year to impeach him following the deadly unrest at the Capitol in Washington.
According to Edison Research, after 18% of ballots counted, Harriet Hageman is credited with 65.1% of the vote against 30.3% for Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice-President Dick Cheney.
A Republican stronghold, the state of Wyoming is unlikely to prove decisive in November’s midterm elections – the “midterms” – in which President Joe Biden’s Democratic peers hope to retain their currently very narrow majority in Congress. .
It is expected that the Republicans will regain control of the House of Representatives, and even that of the Senate as well.
The result in Wyoming illustrates the still strong hold that Donald Trump has over the Republican Party. The former tenant of the White House, who hinted that he would run again in 2024, set up as a priority objective the end of the career of Liz Cheney in Congress.
