Unity starts the year by laying off 1,800 employees – Gamosaurus

The year has barely started and Unity is already announcing a new wave of layoffs within its workforce. And if this announcement is unfortunately not surprising in view of the company’s declarations last November, the number of employees impacted is, however, disconcerting.

Thus, after having laid off nearly 8% of its workforce in May 2022 and then another 4% at the end of June, this time around 1,800 employees should be pushed out. Or approximately 25% of Unity’s total workforce. A series of layoffs that the company claims to be making as part of its restructuring and refocusing on its core business, specifying that it wants to position itself for long-term profitable growth.

Very sad news confirmed by Unity in a filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and then in a statement provided to The Verge.

“As part of our company restructuring, we announced that Unity has made the difficult decision to implement a workforce reduction that will target approximately 25% of our total workforce across all teams. This decision was not taken lightly, and we express our deepest gratitude to those affected for their dedication and contributions. »

After a year 2023 marked by more than 9,500 job cuts in a large number of studios, Unity with its announcement marks the start of 2024 with a black stone. Let’s just hope that this news will not be a reflection of the year that awaits us.
