Unpredictable and enjoyable, what is Mask Girl this black comedy in the top Netflix?

Currently fourth in the top series behind Painkiller or The Chosen One, the South Korean series Mask Girl is a totally unpredictable black comedy.

What is it about ?

A complexed office worker during the day, she turns into a masked web star at night, when a series of misadventures suddenly turn her life upside down.

The new sensation from South Korea

The Mask Girl series found itself in just a few days in the top 10 of the most watched titles on the platform (ahead of Painkiller and L’Elu in particular) currently and this without any form of promotion. Proof that Netflix subscribers are aficionados of South Korean productions and that they want more.

This new K-drama immerses us in the daily life of Kim Mo Mi (Lee Han-byeol), a young woman rejected because she does not fit into the canons of beauty dictated by society. The one who nevertheless likes to be adored has created an alter ego: Mask Girl, a rather soft cam girl who sways her hips in front of her fans. If she attracts men on the internet, in real life our heroine is in love with her boss, who prefers a prettier colleague. When she discovers that these two are having an affair, Kim Mo Mi will make a decision that will change her life.

Mask Girl is a series that surprises by taking an unexpected direction. First black comedy, it takes a more gory and bloody turn from episode 2. Each episode is told from the point of view of a character (as the titles indicate) to better show the excesses of society and the dictates of beauty. And it is perhaps this mixture of genres that divides subscribers. With a more than average rating of 3.2/5, Mask Girl still has a small pool of fans, as can be read on its Allociné page:

I loved. It’s funny, creepy, bloody, violent, melancholy. The main characters are a bit of all that too and I would add cruel for some too. It is also a denunciation of the cult of superficial beauty (retouched with a scalpel) even if it is not winded.” (Kromaria)

I really liked this gore aspect even if it’s true that when I started this drama, I wasn’t expecting this kind of storyline but it makes the story more interesting for once. Although I can understand that some may be lost as a result.(kai-sama)

“Definitely, South Korea has done a great job again, each episode is really good, the storytelling is mastered. The characters are sometimes caricatural but in the fun sense of the word, it makes the reading even cooler. It’s deliciously cruel…in short, all the assets to seduce me.. (Nicholas R)

“Great series! The actors all play amazingly well and the plot keeps you hooked until the end! Koreans are really top actors”. (Elliot Nadame)

“Frankly, I wanted to give this new Korean series a chance by forcing myself to watch several episodes of it, thinking I would end up hooking it because of its original and intriguing side… But nothing helped, I really does not stick. The characters are not at all endearing and the scenario has neither tail nor head. Could not go to the end.” (lyah)

With 7 episodes of 1 hour each, Mask Girl is a relatively short Korean series that can be binged in just a few evenings. A perfect choice for those looking for an entertaining and quick to watch programme.
