Authorities in Australia are reportedly pursuing plans that illegal travelers from high-risk corona areas could face prison sentences of up to five years. The law is intended to apply to citizens who come home and want to circumvent – and disregard – the entry restrictions.
Australia would be the first country to face jail if entry requirements are circumvented. Recently, two Australians circumvented a travel ban from India by flying back home via Doha, the capital of the Gulf State of Qatar.
Connection to India cut
This loophole has now been closed. The Australian government had initially completely banned entries from India earlier this week. However, return flights would resume as soon as possible.
Violations of the rules could now face up to five years in prison or up to 66,000 Australian dollars (about 46,000 euros). No further details have been announced so far. (euc)
