US company with the highest turnover for the first time: Amazon conquers the top in Germany

Amazon is growing and growing, even before the additional boost from Corona: For the first time, the online retailer is pushing itself to the top of the US companies with the highest turnover in this country, ahead of Ford and Exxon Mobil. The largest US employer in Germany is a different company.

The online retailer Amazon rose to the top-selling US company in Germany for the first time last year. With a turnover of 19.85 billion euros in the Federal Republic of Germany, Amazon overtook the Ford works, as the US Chamber of Commerce in Germany (Am Cham) announced in Berlin. According to Am Cham's list, the car manufacturer Ford took second place with sales of 19.80 billion euros and Exxon Mobil took third place with an estimated turnover of 8.58 billion euros. The JET filling stations were therefore in fourth place, the agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere landed in fifth place.

According to Am Cham, the total turnover of the 50 most important US companies in Germany amounted to around 182 billion euros last year. That was around three billion euros more than in the previous year.

However, the number of people employed by the 50 largest US firms in the Federal Republic fell slightly to 306,000. In 2018, the companies still employed around 315,000 people.

McDonald's employs the most people

According to the information, the list of the largest US employers is again headed by the fast food chain McDonald's with around 61,000 employees. In second place are the Ford plants with 22,650 employees, in third and fourth place Amazon and the logistics service provider UPS with around 20,000 employees, followed by Manpower Germany and John Deere.

According to Am Cham, US companies expect the German economy to recover significantly from the Corona crisis in the coming year. The 50 largest US companies rate Germany as a location this year with a grade of 1.8 and thus even more positively than in the previous year. 50 percent of the companies did not reduce their investment volume in Germany during the pandemic, 31 percent even invested more in Germany than before, said Am-Cham President Frank Sportolari.
