  • Republican Jim Jordan does not want to run for election as chairman of the US House of Representatives for a third time.
  • Jordan was chosen as a candidate by his parliamentary group behind closed doors last week – the result was extremely close.
  • According to various US media, Jordan wants to support his party colleague Patrick McHenry as interim spokesman.

Following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry was appointed acting House Speaker for a limited term. However, McHenry has so far only been temporarily deployed for formal tasks. He does not yet fulfill the role of chairman politically.

Why was McCarthy removed as Speaker?

A small group of Republicans forced U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from office on October 3 in a historic move. McCarthy was removed from his post by a vote of 216 to 210. It was the first time in US history that a chairman of the House of Representatives lost his office in this way.

The background is an internal revolt among the Republicans. The leader of the revolt, Matt Gaetz, had introduced a motion for McCarthy’s removal to the House of Representatives. The 41-year-old accused McCarthy, among other things, of making common cause with Democratic President Joe Biden instead of working for the Republican faction.

Jim Jordan, who does not want to stand for election a third time, is a representative from Ohio and belongs to the right-wing fringe of the Republican faction. He represents extreme positions and has stood firmly at Trump’s side for years. The ex-president had aggressively campaigned for Jordan before the vote.

Democrats had already warned that it would send a “terrible message” if the House of Representatives made Jordan, a supporter of a nationwide abortion ban, an election denier and an insider of the attack on the US Capitol, chairman of the chamber.

A few days ago, in an internal election, the Republicans nominated 59-year-old Jim Jordan as the new candidate for chairman of the US House of Representatives. Now he no longer wants to apply for the position.

The US House of Representatives has been without a leader for more than two weeks. Jordan twice failed to get the required 217 votes. According to official information, another attempt to elect the chairman was planned for 6 p.m. (Swiss time).
