Local police officials confirmed at a press conference broadcast by CBS to reporters that there were three fatalities — two people on the train and one person in the garbage truck. The news channel CNN reported at least 50 injuries, referring to a statement from the authorities.

The first photos and videos on social media showed wagons tipped on their side next to the tracks. Some of the passengers who were able to free themselves were sitting on the overturned wagons.

There were different statements about the number of passengers on board. The representative of the local police gave preliminary figures and spoke of 207 people and 14 crew members on board. Seven wagons overturned. According to an Amtrak statement, eight cars and two locomotives jumped off the rails at 12:42 p.m. local time. In addition to the passengers, 12 crew members were also on board, according to the company.
