Used for purchases abroad: fraudsters hack thousands of credit cards

Thousands of German credit card owners are victims of hackers. Fraudsters gain access to shop abroad. As a precaution, Commerzbank blocks hundreds of credit cards. But how big is the damage?

According to a newspaper report, fraudsters hacked thousands of German credit cards to make purchases abroad. Commerzbank alone had hundreds of "Mastercard" blocked as a precaution, the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" reported. The customers of the banks concerned had recently received a letter informing them that their card was blocked with immediate effect. "Your credit card has stopped working," the newspaper quoted from a letter from Commerzbank.

The cards had sales inquiries that indicated "improper use", the customer said. According to the report, around 600 cards were affected in Commerzbank alone, and other credit institutions were also not spared. A Commerzbank manager told the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" that fortunately no major damage had been done: "Our early warning systems worked."
