In northern Germany, the worst snowfalls in decades are expected at the weekend – for many, this brings back memories of the snow catastrophe in the winter of 1978/1979. You can see in the video how bad it was back then in Schleswig-Holstein.

In northern Germany, the mild temperatures coming from the south will meet with arctic polar eddies in the next few days. This combination could cause extreme snowfalls on weekends and even cut off individual villages from the outside world. The predictions may bring to mind images from the winter of the century 1978/1979.

Turn of the year 1978/79: Northern Germany sinks into snow chaos

A snowstorm raged through northern Germany at that time. Such snow dimensions, as can be seen in the video, only exist in northern Germany about every 50 years – the last time was 42 years ago.
