Vladimir Putin calls transidentity “obscurantism”

“I ‘I have a traditional approach: a woman is a woman, a man is a man ”, conceded Vladimir Poutine, Thursday, December 23, to reaffirm his conservative approach. The President of Russia then hit hard, insinuating that gender changes could be equated with deviance. “I hope that our society has an internal moral protection, dictated by our traditional religious confessions (…) against this obscurantism”, he affirmed.

Asked about the cancel culture and the accusations of “transphobia” aimed at the creator of Harry potter, JK Rowling, he argued that if a man could declare himself as a woman and participate in athletic competitions, “women’s sport would be completely gone.” “We should not fight against this with decrees, yelling or throwing accusations, but by supporting our traditional values,” said the head of the Kremlin at his annual press conference.

A man and a woman

Russia passed a law against homosexual “propaganda” in 2013 which officially aims to protect minors but has already been used repeatedly against LGBT + activists and groups.

The latter assert that the text allows the authorities to carry out a homophobic and discriminatory policy towards sexual minorities in general in the name of the defense of “traditional values” promoted by Vladimir Poutine in the face of a West presented as decadent. In Russia, pride marches are prohibited on the basis of this law. In 2020, the Constitution was amended to stipulate that marriage is the union between “a man and a woman”.
