Volkswagen cuts the prices of the ID.4 and ID.5 by almost 15,000 euros and increases their autonomy

Volkswagen is determined to boost sales of its electric cars in 2024. After lowering the prices of its ID.3, the two SUVs in the range, the ID.4 and ID.5, are also seeing their prices drop. Bonus: a new engine is arriving, enough to reduce consumption and therefore increase autonomy!

It’s decided: after having had a bad year in 2023, Volkswagen wants to put all the chances on its side for its electric cars. In parallel with its ID.3, the brand has decided to completely review the range of its two SUVs, the ID.4 and the ID.5, its coupe derivative.

A good thing never comes alone, the press release also announces the arrival of the new in-house engine, the APP550, which promises increased power and lower consumption, enough to increase autonomy.

A new range

To do this, the German brand does not hesitate to review everything and drastically clarifies its equipment levels. You will only need two, the entry-level “ID” and the much more equipped “Life Max” version. The sportier GTX version continues to top the range.

Volkswagen ID.4

Here is the new ID.4 range:

Volkswagen ID.4BatteryWLTP autonomyPowerPrice
Pure 170 ID52 kWh364 km125 kW (170 hp)€43,990
Pure 170 Life Max52 kWh362 km125 kW (170 hp)€45,990
Pro 286 ID77 kWh550 km210 kW (286 hp)€45,990
Pro 286 Life Max77 kWh541 km210 kW (286 hp)€46,990
Pro 4MOTION 286 ID77 kWh530km210 kW (286 hp)€47,990
Pro 4MOTION 286 Life Max77 kWh530km210 kW (286 hp)€48,990
GTX 34077 kWh514km250 kW (340 hp)€48,990

For the Pure version, the entry-level “ID” offers air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and hands-free starting as standard.

For an additional 2,000 euros, the “Life Max” finish adds a lot of things, such as velor upholstery, reversing camera, hands-free unlocking, heated front seats and steering wheel, navigation and metallic paint.

Same layout for the Pro and Pro 4Motion versions, but better. If the “ID” finish is identical in equipment and costs 45,990 euros for the Pro and 47,990 euros for the Pro 4Motion, the “Life Plus” finish only costs an additional 1,000 euros and adds to the previous list the matrix headlights, 19-inch rims or automatic trunk opening.

An overhaul of the range, synonymous with substantial savings: thus equipped, the “Life Max” sees its price drop by 11,370 euros compared to the previous “Life Pro” version with equivalent equipment! In addition, a promotional operation allows the Pro 4Motion version to fall below 47,000 euros, enough to benefit from the ecological bonus. A final price reduction of around 15,000 euros!

Concerning the Pure version, it is less obvious: the access price only drops by 10 euros, but the alloy wheels and heated velor seats disappear. In addition, this battery can only be recharged at 50 kW using standard fast charging, a very low power; to upgrade to 125 kW, you will have to pay 760 euros. A little petty.

Volkswagen ID.5

The ID.5, the cut counterpart of the ID.4, uses the same bases, but a narrower range. Neither Pure version nor the Pro 4Motion version are thus available; the access version is therefore the Pro, with the 286 hp engine and the 77 kWh battery, accessible from 50,500 euros.

Both finishes are included, but the entry-level “ID” is better equipped than the ID.4, with the arrival of 19-inch rims as standard equipment. The “Life Max” finish requires an additional 1,000 euros and gains the same equipment as the ID.4, alloy wheels excluded of course.

Volkswagen ID.5BatteryWLTP autonomyPowerPrice
Pro 286 ID77 kWh556 km210 kW (286 hp)€50,500
Pro 286 Life Max77 kWh551 km210 kW (286 hp)€51,500
GTX 34077 kWh532km250 kW (340 hp)€65,400

The price drop is therefore logically a little less impressive than for the ID.4, with “only” 11,260 euros reduction compared to the 2023 range. Here too, Volkswagen will make a small effort on the Pro version to do so. go below 47,000 euros, and thus make him benefit from the bonus.

Power, autonomy and practicality on the rise!

The good news does not stop there, since the two SUVs benefit from the latest innovations in the range – and in particular the ID.7 sedan.

The central screen receives the latest version of the infotainment software, called “ID. Software 4.0″, featuring a more logical interface and adjustment controls now backlit. As for the gear selector, it leaves the digital counters to take the place of the right-hand stalk.

As for the technical part, the ID.4 and ID.5 benefit from the group’s new APP550 engine. An announcement which is already a few months old and from which its cousins are already benefiting, such as the Skoda Enyaq or the Audi Q4 e-tron, but which is finally arriving in France.

As a reminder, this unit is both more powerful (286 hp, + 112 hp) and less greedy than the previous one, since it only consumes (including recharging losses) starting at 15.8 kWh/100 km for the ID.5 and 16 kWh/100 km for the ID.4, because of its less advanced aerodynamics.

Decreasing figures (respectively it was necessary to count 16.1 and 16.6 kWh/100 km before), enough to increase the autonomy by 25 km for the ID.5 (up to 556 km WLTP) and 24 km for the ID.4 (up to 550 km WLTP).

Finally, the fast charging power increases from 135 kW to 175 kW for the all-wheel drive versions, enough to save 178 km in ten minutes according to the brand. Still at the recharge level, battery preconditioning is now available, allowing the battery to be heated before charging to obtain the best performance.

Fierce competition

You will have understood: Volkswagen’s electric SUVs are becoming much more interesting. This will not be too much to take on the competitors: the Renault Scénic E-Tech promises extremely well-placed prices, while the Tesla Model Y, the absolute benchmark in the segment, should be updated during the year.
