Voltalia will build a photovoltaic power plant for CNES in Guyana – 12/22/2021 at 6:18 pm

(AOF) – Voltalia and CNES (Center National d’Etudes Spatiales), landowner of the Guyanese Space Center, have announced the launch of a photovoltaic power plant project. Voltalia was named the winner of the call for tenders launched by CNES for the construction, on the Kourou space base, of a photovoltaic park with a surface area of 5 hectares and a capacity of 4.2 megawatts. The financing of the construction, for an amount of 5 million euros, is provided by the CNES, which benefits from the France Relance Plan. The solar power plant is expected to come into operation in June 2023.

The project is part of a larger greening program for the Kourou space base which will eventually include two photovoltaic parks and two biomass power plants to supply green electricity and cooling to the infrastructures of the Guiana Space Center (CSG). .

The CSG’s ambition is to supply itself 90% to renewable energies before 2030. These projects will allow it to make only marginal use of the Guyanese EDF network, of which the CSG currently consumes around 15% of annual electricity production. In total, all of these investments will reduce the CSG’s electricity bill by 25%.

The CSG’s energy transition plan also includes the renovation and construction of more efficient buildings, as well as the greening of the propellants used by launchers.
