The capital of the canton of Graubünden wants to move away from natural gas and become CO2-neutral. In order to achieve this goal, the municipal energy supplier IBC is planning to massively expand the district heating network. The project costs a total of over 300 million Swiss francs. 80 million of which should come from the city coffers. The Chur voters will decide on this amount on March 12, 2023.
Heat is already being extracted from the waste water in Chur, and the waste heat from the Trimmis waste incineration plant is also being used. This energy source is to be expanded by 2040. Together with heat from the groundwater, it should be possible to supply the population with CO2-neutral energy.
Political support large
There is a clear majority for the project in the Chur city parliament. The Yes Committee includes SP, Greens, GLP, Mitte and FDP. Proponents argue that it is an investment in the future. The only party rejecting the bill is the SVP. The project is a high-risk experiment that will result in a high mountain of debt.
