Developed by four people, Elk is a Mastodon web client that aims to be agile and close to the interface of a certain Twitter.

The solution is still in alpha.

Elk: the best of Mastodon and Twitter?

Have you tried getting into Mastodon but its interface is confusing you? This may be the solution for you: Elk. This web client, currently under development, aims to offer an alternative interface to the official solution. Impossible not to see in particular similarities with that of Twitter.

Note well, before possibly using it, that its developers emphasize that Elk is not yet ready for use by all. Only the most bug-tolerant and willing to help with development should give it a try. Once the alpha phase is complete and ready for the public, the application will be made open source.

What differences?

First of all, it is impossible not to note that the column with the Home buttons, notifications, local/global public thread or even the favorites (which again become a heart and not a star here) moves from right to left. Note also a “zen mode” button at the bottom right which hides this column as well as the buttons under the “pouëts”.

The insert to compose messages, it moves at the top of the central column, while a button in the left column also allows you to write your pouëts. If the main options of notifications, interface (dark or light mode) and profile are there, however, there are some things missing for the moment in Elk. We particularly regret the possibility of switching to an advanced interface in several columns as proposed by Mastodon.

The official solution therefore remains for the moment by far the most complete, but Elk is only at the beginning of its development. It also remains to be seen whether this web version will subsequently be brought to mobile applications.

  • A “Twitter-like” interface.
  • Completely translated into French.

Still very young, Elk is an open-source project developed by 4 people. Still in alpha, it still offers a relatively complete Mastodon experience that is close to what Twitter can offer. A web application to put in the hands of anyone who wants to leave Twitter for Mastodon without sacrificing user experience.
