Warning level 4 in Tyrol – Lots of fresh snow: Deadly danger on mountains!

Large amounts of fresh snow and stormy winds dramatically increase the risk of avalanches in the Tyrolean mountains! In some cases, warning level four of the five-part scale applies.

“Forecasted larger amounts of fresh snow combined with stormy winds will increase the risk of avalanches in parts of Tyrol at higher altitudes above the tree line on Sunday,” the state says. From the afternoon onwards, the avalanche warning service issued level 4 of the five-part scale, i.e. high danger, in some areas. Up to half a meter of fresh snow. The high avalanche danger applies to the areas of the Gurgler Group, the central Stubai Alps and the central East Tyrol to the south (Deferegger Alps, Schober Group, Lienz Dolomites). It was said that 40 to 50 centimeters of fresh snow could accumulate there. Be careful even at level 3. At the same time, other parts of Tyrol were already at avalanche danger level 3 from Sunday morning, i.e. a significant danger, the experts warned. Most avalanche accidents usually occur at this warning level. Level 3 is “often underestimated,” State Security Councilor Astrid Mair (ÖVP) appealed for caution.
