Water level high – Salzburg is on alert because of rain

The heavy showers lead to a tense situation in Salzburg. The all clear will not be in sight until tomorrow.

“Our fire department is closely monitoring the situation in the area. You are on alert. But the Salzach level has been falling since noon,” says Wolfgang Viertler. The mayor of Mittersill is relieved. On Saturday morning he watched the height of the river with great interest. Within a few hours, the Salzach rose from 4.28 to 4.36 meters in Mittersill. But by midday the rain had stopped. If the river had reached 4.70 meters and thus alarm level 1, there could have been the first floods. “Fortunately, it didn’t come to that,” says Viertler. Flood protection activated in Grossarl The heavy rainfall also made itself felt in the city of Salzburg. Bike underpasses had to be closed due to the high Salzach. Meanwhile, the situation in Pongau was tense. A dog was buried up to its snout in the mud and had to be rescued by the fire brigade. In Grossarl, the state of Salzburg even activated flood protection. Residents who had only fled mudslides and floods in 2021 packed the most important things on Saturday morning as a precaution and hoped for a relaxation. Which also came. From midday the situation calmed down across the country. The weather service appeased. “On Sunday there will be more showers, but they will no longer cover the country,” says Michael Butschek from Geosphere Austria. “Nevertheless, small-scale flooding can still occur. An all-clear is not in sight until Monday noon,” adds Butschek.
