The Summer Olympics which will be held in Paris are expected to be the target of numerous cyberattacks. So many that some should slip through the cracks.

At the start of the year, the National Information Systems Security Agency (ANSSI) already warned that the Olympic Games were in the sights of all malicious actors on the Internet. An alert which is reiterated today by the agency, during a press point at the headquarters of the organizing committee. According to its director, the agency should have a lot of work in the coming months. And even too much.

We will have to deal with cyberattacks

France will have to face intense pressure on the internet during the Olympic Games. This is the observation made by the director of ANSSI Vincent Strube. And this, even to the point that it should be impossible to ward off all offensives.

We must not have any illusions, we are not going to prevent all attacks from occurring during the Games. We are not going to have Games without cyberattacks. Our work, our collective objective, is to ensure that these cyberattacks do not harm the running of the Games. » he indicated.

However, the manager tries, after this observation, to remain reassuring. He explains that the threats are taken seriously, with significant upstream work already carried out. “ We anticipated, we have been working on this threat since the beginning of 2020 » explains Franz Regul, director of IT security for the organizing committee.

Threats up to ten times greater than those of the Tokyo Olympics

Still, the geopolitical context makes these Paris 2024 Games a “ sounding board, symbols, media amplification » attractive for all those who operate illegally on the web.

These are Games which will take place in a context of strong pressure in terms of cyber threats which come from ever more agile, ever more stealthy States, from organized crime (…) which today attack in practice everyone, no longer spare anyone » describes Vincent Strubel.

And to understand to what extent the current tense situation makes these Olympic Games explosive in terms of cybersecurity, we only have to compare with the previous edition of Tokyo, having taken place in 2021. This one had to face at the time to 450 million cyber attacks. A figure that is both impressive and quite low compared to what awaits Paris. Because for Vincent Strubel, the volume of these offensives should be “ eight to ten times higher » in our capital. A real challenge.
