While she refused to resume her role as Samantha in “And Just Like That”, Kim Cattrall finally agreed to make a cameo in the sequel to “Sex & the city”. An appearance that was to be a surprise for the fans…
Sex and The City fans have been waiting for this since the launch of And just like that… Kim Cattrall, who played the iconic Samantha, will reprise her role in season 2 for a very short cameo… which should have remained secret.
Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie), Michael Patrick King (the creator), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte) have indeed entrusted to Deadline that this appearance was to be a surprise for the fans. They were also very disappointed that the information had leaked.
But now that everyone is aware of this cameo, they wanted to temper the expectations of fans: although it is important for the story, this appearance will be very short.
“I’m not going to dwell on what has already been revealed, but we had this idea to celebrate 25 years in a fun way”, explained Sarah Jessica Parker to Deadline. “Samantha existed on the show in the first season, with their friendship evolving over text messages.”
“She lives in London, and you’ll see more of their relationship in this season, before her face accompanies the posts. […] This phone call comes at a very opportune time in history. It’s sentimental, it’s funny, and it’s a perfect representation of their friendship.”
As a reminder, this long-awaited cameo will see Samantha give Carrie a phone call. To shoot this scene, Kim Cattrall did not play (nor speak) with her former partners, Cynthia Nixon (Miranda), Kristin Davis (Charlotte) and Sarah Jessica Parker.
“We worked very hard to keep it a secret”, added Cynthia Nixon. “It must have been a wonderful moment and a shock to people watching the episode. We’re pretty disappointed that everyone knows she’s coming back. It’s not like there’s a lot going on, it’s a very small cameo. The surprise effect was a big part of the strength of this episode..”
Kristin Davis continues to hope that the details of this appearance remain secret, in order to preserve this element of surprise. “It’s the 25th anniversary and we know the fans miss Samantha. We wanted to try to please them. […] I just hope people aren’t disappointed.“
Michael Patrick King, the creator, also confided that he himself was surprised that Kim Cattrall agreed to appear in season 2 of And Just Like That… He does not understand how this miracle could have happened, but he is is said to be happy to please Sex and the City fans.
Because since the announcement of the continuation of the cult series, Kim Cattrall has not ceased to declare that she no longer wanted to slip into the skin of Samantha. She had even insisted that another actress replace her. We have to believe that the energy of the fans pushed her to reconsider her statements.
Season 2 of And Just Like That… premieres June 22 on HBO Max. In France, season 1 was broadcast in US+24 on Salto (the made in France streaming platform which is now closed), then in second broadcast on TF1. For the moment, the channel has not announced a French broadcast date.
