NOUR SHAMS, West Bank (Reuters) – Israeli soldiers exchanged fire with Palestinian fighters in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, leaving two people dead on the second day of the raid by the Israeli army, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Israeli forces launched a raid on the Nour Shams area, near the Palestinian town of Tulkarm, on Friday.

Fighters were killed and some arrested, according to the Israeli army, which also reported four soldiers injured in the clashes.

The Tulkarm Brigades, made up of fighters from several Palestinian factions, said their men were still battling the Israeli army on Saturday.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health confirmed the deaths of two people since Friday in Nours Shams, a region that is home to refugees from the 1948 war and their descendants. The two victims are a fighter and a 16-year-old teenager, according to Palestinian officials.

Violence in the West Bank was already on the rise before the Israeli assault on Gaza, sparked by the Hamas attack in southern Israel on October 7.

It has intensified since then, with intensifying Israeli army raids, settler violence and fighting in Palestinian streets.
