“Stillwater”, directed by Tom McCarthy, will be released on Wednesday September 22, 2021. It is Camille Cottin’s very first Hollywood film, in a duet with Matt Damon. So what is the French actress’ American adventure worth?

This Wednesday, September 22, 2021 is released in cinemas Stillwater, directed by Tom McCarthy. Casting side, the choice is surprising. We see Camille Cottin share, for the first time, the poster with a Hollywood star, namely Matt Damon. This film, we recommend it for its casting despite the few lengths and an outcome that leaves a bitter taste. In Stillwater, Matt Damon plays Bill, an American father, an oil driller from Oklahoma, arriving in Marseille to support his daughter, in prison because he has been convicted of a murder she denies having committed. Bill is determined to exonerate his daughter, despite all the barriers that stand in front of him. He will also befriend a woman who lives in Marseille (Camille Cottin) and her daughter.

No doubt that Stillwater is a rich film: from cultural barriers to this complex love story between father and daughter, the common thread of the scenario, it convinces above all thanks to the richness of its themes. And if it is the first role in a Hollywood film by Camille Cottin, we can glimpse here the bright future which is reserved for the French actress. Of course, it will not be the last American feature film to which it will be in the credits (and we are not saying that just because it will be showing in House of Gucci, by Ridley Scott).

“Stillwater” who plays the romance card, a fake good idea?

Stillwater therefore marks, without question, the beginning of the rest of Camille Cottin’s career. But if his character remains interesting, we regret the extent of his relationship with Bill, played by Matt Damon. A character much deeper and more interesting … because masculine? Under his gruff and ultra-virile airs, Bill gradually breaks the clichés of the American white trash, stepped out of his deep Oklahoma for the first time. Impassive at first, his sensitivity gradually emerges. We can only empathize with him, following his fight to exonerate his daughter at all costs, despite the language barrier, cultural differences and a legal system that exceeds him. And if we regret the extra half hour of film and the perplexing outcome, we remember Stillwater his male character. On the contrary, the role played by Camille Cotin leaves her hungry, getting lost in a love story that could have remained at the stage of friendship. The film shows that we can write a character of a hard and sensitive man at the same time, we would have liked him to go even further.
