what is it, is it really harmless to the skin?

Do you dream of having no more tan lines? New tan-through swimsuits have appeared. Is it safe for skin and health? We answer you.

If you love spending days at the beach or by the pool in the summer, then you know that when you tan, you get bathing suit marks that show up. These are natural and vary according to the shape of the bikini chosen, and the intensity of your tan (all skin phototypes do not have the same amount of sun). If the sun allows in particular to synthesize vitamin D and contributes to mental well-being, keep in mind that exposing yourself too long in the sun can have health risks.

Thus, you must limit your exposure time (especially during the hottest hours, between noon and 4 p.m.) and absolutely apply a sunscreen with a strong UV protection index (index 30 minimum) in order to protect yourself. If you’ve tanned but bathing suit marks are bothering you, know that a new generation of “through-tanning” swimsuits appeared on the market.

Tan-through swimsuit, a danger or a new way to tan?

Their goal ? Get a full body tan without having to go topless thanks to a specific technology that only lets through part of the UV rays. “There is a real patented fabric in the world, OEKO-TEX® and made in Europe by Sunselect”says Luc Dessauvages, co-creator of the brand Bikunu. But beware, not all tan-through swimsuits sold on the Internet have this technology. “Others use fabrics that allow tan through because the mesh is stretched.” So they don’t offer no sunscreen, therefore, a protective cream must be applied underneath, at the risk of getting sunburned and/or exposing yourself to more serious risks such as melanoma.

The fabric used by Bikunu provides protection: “It is patented on a base of white fabric (note: aisni: if you see a black tan-through jersey, there is a good chance that it is not in patented fabric) and only allows certain wavelengths to pass: between 310 and 315 for UVB, and 440 and 460 for UVA.There are very harmful wavelengths and others less so. The latter are not very aggressive and sufficient for tanning.” The textile acts as “sun protection” while only letting through UVA and UVB necessary for tanning, “8% UVB and 20% UVA”. It is therefore not necessary to apply cream under the swimsuit. Below, you tan three times slower than on the rest of your body. “So we need more protect the rest of the skin with sunscreen.” Another good opportunity to follow the recommendations of the WHO, that is to say to renew the application every two hours for example.

To have swimsuits that are not just white (often transparent), Bikunu works with a designer who develops color combinations that do not degrade the performance of the fabric. If you want to adopt this type of tan-through swimsuit, then go for it, but don’t forget that no swimsuit justifies a lack of sun protection!
