Ethereum reached a crucial milestone with the deployment of its Dencun update on the Goerli testnet, overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. This development, called Dencun, is a merger of the Cancun and Deneb updates, a revolution for the Ethereum blockchain.
The Promises of Dencun
The Dencun update introduces the “Proto-Danksharding” under EIP-4844promising a significant reduction in transaction fees on layers 2. A major breakthrough, which sees Ethereum skillfully juggling between performance improvement and cost optimization.
This update allows Ethereum nodes to temporarily store and access data off-chain, thereby reducing storage requirements. It should also significantly reduce transaction costs for dApps on Ethereum.
To prepare for this transition, the development team therefore opted for a gradual implementationby first implementing the update on different test networks.

But, every challenge is an opportunity, and these tests are crucial to fine-tuning the update Before its large deployment on the main network. The Ethereum community is holding its breath, anticipating the moment when Dencun joins the mainnet. When will Dencun be ready for the big leap?
Before a mainnet launch, eyes are on the next tests on Sepolia on January 31 and on Holesky on February 7 next. If everything goes smoothly, the Ethereum mainnet should welcome this major update as soon as end of Q1 2024.
