On the occasion of International Contraception Day, the National Medicines Safety Agency has established an overview of the contraceptives favored by French women.

Contraception continues to evolve. Today it is no longer a problem that concerns exclusively women. But despite everything, when we discuss this subject around us, it is terms specific to female contraception that we hear: pill, IUD, vaginal ring … This Saturday, September 25, on the eve of International Day of contraception, the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) has published a new study which takes stock of the contraceptives favored by French women and above all confirms the decline in 3rd and 4th generation pills.

The health scandals on the 3rd and 4th generation pills, including that resounding on Diane 35 (which is originally an anti-acne), have pushed women to turn to other means of contraception. Now, doctors are more likely to prescribe contraceptives that present a low risk of thrombosis: such as 1st and 2nd generation pills. Until ten years ago, the 3rd and 4th generation pills on the one hand, and the 1st and 2nd generation pills, were prescribed in a balanced way (50/50). Now the split is 14/86 on the other… to the advantage of the 1st and 2nd generations obviously.

The acclaimed copper IUD

The pills have generally been less popular with women in recent years. Many are turning to the copper IUD (sales have doubled in ten years), which has the advantage of being an intrauterine and non-hormonal device, which causes fewer side effects and which, too, avoids accidental pregnancies by forgetting the pill.

In addition to this observation, the ANSM advises women, whether young or not, not to take the issue of contraception lightly and to turn to a health professional to find the contraceptive method that suits them. ANSM also directs to the site questionsexualite.fr which provides “reliable and detailed information on contraceptive methods”.
