France is currently facing a cold snap. New departments are affected by the orange “snow-ice” vigilance.

But certain regions are particularly affected by this cold snap and weather phenomena which call for caution. An orange “snow-ice” alert already concerned Cantal and Lozère. She is now extended to four new departments in the south of France: Tarn, Aveyron, Aude and Hérault. A vigilance bulletin from Meteo France was published this Wednesday, January 10 and specifies: “Precipitation is gradually becoming organized from the Mediterranean, in the form of snow up to low altitude this evening and next night”. For floods, Pas-de-Calais is still on orange alert.

What does this orange “snow-ice” vigilance mean for French residents in the departments concerned? Among the possible consequences, Meteo France cites snowfall and icy conditions that could complicate traffic“particularly in the forestry sector where falling trees can increase difficulties”. In addition to the risk of accident, damage can be feared on the electricity and telephone distribution networks. Be careful of cuts therefore.
But what to do ? Meteo France advises to keep informed with the authorities, to limit your travel if possible, to equip your vehicle for snow or ice, and to take blankets and food with you when traveling by car, in case you get stuck. At home, continuous combustion heaters should also be avoided, and you can install generators outside your home. We could add to this by keeping candles and flashlights within reach to provide light in the event of a power outage. Concerning the extreme cold, 48 departments will still be on alert this Thursday, January 11.
