Whoopi Goldberg is at the heart of a lively controversy. The actress made critical remarks this Monday, January 31 on the set of her talk show The View, broadcast on the American channel ABC. She then commented on the decision of a school in Tennessee to ban the comic strip Maus d’Art Spielgelman, where he tells the story of his father, a survivor of the death camps, and where the Shoah is staged with anthropomorphic characters. A choice that outraged the author, who entrusted his “dismay” : “I can’t believe it. I’ve met so many young people who have learned things from reading my book. Something really crazy is happening in Tennessee”. On the set of her show, Whoopi Goldberg was surprised that it was nudity that prompted this school to ban this work.
“It’s about the Holocaust, about the murder of six million people, but you didn’t mind? If you’re going to do this, then let’s be honest about it. Because the Holocaust is not a question of race (…) It is about the inhumanity of man towards another man”, she launched. Quickly on social networks, many Internet users reacted to the words of Whoopi Goldberg. “Anti-Semitism is a cancer and a poison that is increasingly excused in our culture and television – and permeates spaces that should shock us all”, wrote the former presenter of this show, Meghan McCain. Faced with the outcry she caused, the actress, particularly known for her role in The color purple and Sister Act, took the floor.

On her Twitter account, she posted a statement apologizing. “On today’s show, I said the Holocaust ‘is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.’ does both”, she first admitted. And to continue, quoting the CEO of an association: “As Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League shared, ‘The Holocaust was about the Nazis’ systematic annihilation of the Jewish people – whom they considered an inferior race'”. In her message, Whoopi Goldberg explained that she had “cheated”. “Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never change., concluded the actress. I’m sorry for the hurt I’ve caused.”
