The video streaming platform adopts a new way of avoiding the review bombing.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is undoubtedly the pop-culture event of the season, tied with the release of House of the Dragonthe spin-off of Game Of Thrones on HBO.

A highly anticipated and closely scrutinized series

The project was eagerly awaited by hordes of Tolkien fans like those of the Peter Jackson trilogy made in the early 2000s, and Amazon Prime Video had no choice but to pull out all the stops to honor to the marvelous world imagined by JRR Tolkien.

With a budget of nearly $435 million for its first season alone, Rings of Power impresses with its sets, costumes and staging.

The first two episodes were a success because, according to Amazon, 25 million subscribers watched the first two episodes on the day of their broadcast last Friday, September 2.

While overall feedback from the press and spectators is positive, some people have hated Amazon’s work and have not hesitated to make it known on review platforms and social networks.

A 72-hour time limit and moderators to weed out trolls

An army of trolls hastened to publish many very negative opinions to say all the bad things they thought of this adaptation, considered too woke or too disrespectful of Tolkien’s writings. If the score Rotten Tomatoes of the series is 84% for the critics, it is only 37% for the general public, a particularly low score which tends to show that the first two episodes suffered a review bombing.

Amazon wants to protect its blockbuster from racist and misogynistic opinions, and is adopting a new strategy to avoid trolls on its platform. Opinions shared on Amazon Prime Video about Rings of Power as well as all new series produced by the e-commerce giant will not be published on the platform for 72 hours. Moderators will read and analyze each message to determine if it is a legitimate criticism or a troll.

This new management of comments is commendable, but it nevertheless raises questions. By adopting such moderation, we could also attribute bad intentions to Amazon Prime Video, which could at the same time remove unfavorable opinions from some of its most strategic programs.

It will therefore be necessary to see over time if Amazon engages in some form of censorship or if the system is used wisely to eliminate the most inappropriate comments, and only them.

Amazon Prime Video

  • A catalog that grows month after month
  • An SVOD platform and many other services
  • A fairly complete back catalog

Good but could do better. This is clearly the first impression left on us by Amazon Prime Video. Its catalog remains neat, home productions from Amazon are often of high quality, but everything remains weighed down by an interface that can be greatly improved.
