Will lead: Ikea finally offers Matter (in beta) on its latest gateway

To accompany the launch of Matter and initiate the long-awaited revolution for the connected home with this “universal” language, many manufacturers hastened to announce compatible objects. This was particularly the case for Ikea with its Dirigera gateway. But while this, failing to be natively compatible, should quickly receive an update bringing it support from Matter, the wait still continues more than a year later. We have even had time to see version 1.2 of Matter arrive since then, but things finally seem to be moving forward on Ikea’s side according to a recent message published on Reddit.

A trial version of Matter to control Zigbee lamps

No, Matter is still not officially rolling out to the Dirigera gateway. However, it would be possible to download an experimental version of the new language for the connected home by going to the “Workshop” of the companion application, Ikea Home smart.

The Workshop was launched a few months ago to allow users to try out new features currently in development and, above all, to allow Ikea to obtain more feedback in order to refine them before releasing them. offer to everyone. These are therefore possibly incomplete and/or unstable functionalities. In the case of Matter, Ikea specifies that the version currently available allows Zigbee lamps to be added to a Matter network. In other words, if you have a Matter controller like a Nest Hub or an Echo Show, you can use it, with the Google Home or Alexa app, to control Ikea’s Zigbee lamps. So it’s just about using Dirigera as a Matter bridge.

Other categories supported later

The manufacturer specifies that it will subsequently be possible to use its Dirigera gateway to add other device categories to an existing Matter network. We obviously think of the Parasoll, Vallhorn & Badring sensors launched at the start of the year. On the other hand, the possibility of transforming the Dirigera gateway into a Matter controller to create a new network and control any Matter compatible device via its application is not mentioned. We will nevertheless remember that things are progressing. And it was time.
