Matrix Resurrections, released on December 22, 2021, is it the first opus of a new trilogy? Director Lana Wachowski answered this burning question from fans.
On the occasion of the broadcast on TFX of Matrix Revolutions, 3rd opus of the Matrix saga, we ask ourselves the following question: is a Matrix 5 in the works?
After Resurrections, the 4th installment which greatly divided the fans, will the Matrix saga stop there? “It’s a question for Lana Wachowski“declared Keanu Reeves at the microphone of Fandom in December 2021.
“I mean, if she wants to do a new story and include me in it, I’ll be very honored, and very grateful, and I’d love to know what happens to Trinity and Neo, and the rest of the world.”he assures.
In the same interview, Carrie-Anne Moss also revealed that she was ready to put on the Trinity costume for a 5th time: “Absolutely, of course… that would be great”, she enthused. As for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the new face of Morpheus, he remained more cautious on the issue.
“To be honest, I think before I even start those conversations, I just want Resurrections to come out and see how it resonates with audiences. As for what comes next, I think a lot will depend on how it will be received by the viewers, how it will be digested. Then, based on that, see if there is a real need to continue this story or if it comes full circle”he nuanced.
On December 21, 2021 in San Francisco, an AP Entertainment reporter asked the main interested party, Lana Wachowski, the question directly. “Is Resurrections the first part of a new trilogy?”, he asks. The director responds tit for tat: “Who spread this rumour? We want a name!”she joked.
After a moment of reflection, she answered with a smile: “My producer is over here. No!” The answer is therefore clear: according to the filmmaker, the circle is complete and it is not expected that the Matrix saga will continue beyond the 4th part. However, in Hollywood, anything is possible.
Indeed, it may well be that a Matrix 5 is done without Lana Wachowski. On December 26, 2021, producer James McTeigue assured that the 4th part would have seen the light of day, with or without the director.
“Yes, it’s true, there were other versions of the Matrix 4 script before Lana got into it. But I guess fate willed her story to come at the right time, and Warner Bros. .was ready to move forward with this narrative”he revealed at the microphone of Collider.
“I think when you have a franchise with such a big money-making capacity, there are always discussions. It’s the same with Marvel, where they go back to their productions, allow themselves repetitions, whether it’s with Spider- Man, Iron Man or Thor. There are always opportunities to bring these movies up to date and make money from them, and new stories.”he explained.
“I wouldn’t say there are only financial reasons, but yes, regarding Matrix, there were several versions before Resurrections. None were ideal. So when Lana came to us and said, ‘I want to make a new movie”, of course they chose to follow the director behind The Matrix”he concluded.
However, the possibility of a 5th Matrix is relatively remote due to the commercial failure of Resurrections. The film brought in 157 million dollars worldwide for a budget approaching 200 million. In France, the work did not even exceed one million admissions. This bitter setback has certainly signed the death warrant of the franchise in cinema.
“I think for now we’ll stick with the movie you’ve seen. We don’t have a prequel in mind. We don’t have a sequel in mind. We don’t have an additional trilogy.”said producer James McTeigue after the release of the 4th episode.
