Will there be four candidates?
CDU politician Buder wants to run for chairmanship

In addition to Norbert Röttgen, Helge Braun and Friedrich Merz, she would be the first woman in the race for the CDU chairmanship: Sabine Buder, city councilor in Biesenthal, Brandenburg, wants to be nominated by her district association Märkisch-Oderland.

So far, three men have faced each other in the fight for the successor to CDU leader Armin Laschet: the foreign politician Norbert Röttgen, the outgoing Chancellery chief Helge Braun and the former Union parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz. Now the field of applicants could be supplemented by a woman from Brandenburg. Sabine Buder, 37 years old and a local politician in the city of Biesenthal, also wants to run for party chairmanship. Several media reports unanimously.

The “Spiegel” writes that Buder wants to be nominated at an extraordinary meeting of the board of her district association Märkisch-Oderland that evening. A nomination by a party structure is mandatory for a candidacy for the top post in the CDU. Röttgen, Braun and Merz have already been announced as candidates by their respective district associations.

Buder told “Spiegel” that although she considered all three previous candidates to be suitable, she still wanted to show that there were women who were willing to take on responsibility. The magazine quotes the politician as saying: “If you want, I will be happy to make my contribution to the renewal of the party. Otherwise, I will continue to be a mother and a veterinarian.” As for her goals, Buder said that she wanted to bring more everyday life into politics.

First, the “Tagesspiegel” reported on Buder’s plans for a candidacy. Accordingly, the 37-year-old is considered a supporter of her party friend Friedrich Merz. The politician recently posted a picture of the 66-year-old on Facebook and wrote: “From my point of view, there can only be one person for the job.” Now the local politician, who should only have outsider chances in the competition for the chairmanship, could become Merz’s competitor.

According to the “Tagesspiegel”, it is uncertain that her district association will nominate her. According to the report the 37-year-old made few friends in her own ranks with her analysis of the Bundestag election, which was disastrous for the CDU. According to her own statements, she received hardly any support during the election campaign. Buder, who is the parliamentary group leader of her party in the Biesenthaler city council, missed the entry into the Bundestag, but achieved the best first vote result of the CDU in Brandenburg.
