Nobody expected it and yet… The Winamp multimedia player is making a comeback.

Four years after the deployment of Winamp 5.8 in beta version, the iconic player of the 2000s will be back under Windows 11.

Winamp is back after 9 years of absence

This is an unexpected return. The name Winamp will mean nothing to the youngest, but this legendary multimedia player had established itself as the player popular MP3 audio in the 2000s. The freeware, which debuted in Windows 95, was then used by millions of people around the world. Its 16 years of success came to an abrupt end in 2013, when Winamp closed its doors following a takeover by Radionomy. Since then, the reader has not offered a final version, only a few unfinished betas.

Almost a decade later, here it is back under Winamp 5.9, a version fully compatible with Windows 11 offering to synchronize with the Android app of the player. A few other tweaks are on the program to mark the occasion, such as support for the VP8 and M38 codecs, a directory dedicated to podcasts and even better handling of playlists in HTML format. Small bonus, and not least, Winamp 5.9 can read https:// streams and compressed modules in XMZ, S3Z, MDZ and ITZ formats.

For the most nostalgic, the media player can be downloaded for free in Release Candidate on the official website, in the link below.
