It’s official, Microsoft will soon end support for WSA in Windows 11. As a result, users will no longer be able to install Android apps on their computer.

Just a few weeks ago, Microsoft announced the arrival of many Android applications in Windows 11. After a year 2023 rather busy with updates, the Windows subsystem for Android, more commonly called WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android), will be abandoned by the Redmond firm next year. In an official document, Microsoft states that users will no longer be able to install new Android applications starting March 2025.

End of course for Android apps on Windows 11

Since the launch of Windows 11 in October 2021, users can download Android apps from their PC. Very popular with certain customers of the Microsoft operating system, this functionality allows you to natively run games and applications from the Amazon Appstore. Unfortunately for them, the company led by Satya Nadella finally made the decision to no longer continue supporting WSA, as reported to us by the site Windows Central :

Microsoft is ending support for Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). Therefore, the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all WSA-dependent apps and games will no longer be supported starting March 5, 2025. Until then, technical support will remain available to customers. Customers who installed Amazon Appstore or Android apps before March 5, 2024 will continue to have access to these apps until the deprecation date of March 5, 2025 “.

Microsoft ends WSA without giving explanation

As we can discover in this document intended for developers, users who installed applications from the Amazon Appstore before March 5, 2024 will be able to benefit from them for another whole year. Microsoft nevertheless clarified that technical support will remain active until the deadline of March 5, 2025.

Although this feature is appreciated by some users, it nevertheless seems that it is relatively little used on Windows. A somewhat regrettable decision, beyond being surprising, especially since Microsoft loudly proclaimed that this functionality would open up “ new opportunities for developers and creators on Windows “.
