Windows 11: Problems and solutions when switching

• Problems with AMD processors: Devices with AMD’s Ryzen processors suffered performance losses after the update to Windows 11. In the worst case, their performance dropped by up to 15 percent under the new operating system. Solution: Install the patch and driver provided by Microsoft or AMD. If you continue to experience performance issues after this, refer to the next section.
• Problems with HDR monitors: The update to Windows 11 brought display errors on some HDR screens. As Microsoft confirmed, the problem mainly occurs when editing images with white areas that appear yellowish or of a different color. According to the Windows manufacturer, the cause is Win32 interfaces that report errors or unexpected information under certain conditions. Solution: Install optional update KB5008353.
• Outlook search not working: Outlook on Windows 11 has been causing problems for a long time. The Outlook search does not return any results or causes the program to crash. Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2019 and Outlook 2016 are affected in conjunction with POP3 and IMAP mail accounts where the messages are stored in PST/OST storage files. Solution: Microsoft is working on the bug and has promised an update. Until the issue is resolved, a workaround is to turn off Windows Desktop Search. Incidentally, the problem also occurred in Windows 10, but it has now been fixed there.
• VPN Issues: The updates KB5009543 and KB5009566 distributed during the January patch day paralyzed the built-in VPN in Windows 11 and Windows 10. solution: Install update KB5010795.
• Printing via print server: In the summer and fall of 2021, Microsoft was hit by a series of printing glitches. One of the problems involved printer connections through print servers, which are common in office environments. Solution: Install update KB5007262.
• Kaspersky does not start: As Microsoft confirmed, the KB5007215 update distributed on November Patchday caused problems with the Microsoft Installer in Windows 11. It no longer updated or repaired certain apps so that they would not start. For example, Kaspersky Endpoint Security was affected. solution: Install update KB5007262.
• Blue screens with Intel SST: Microsoft has confirmed compatibility issues between Windows 11 and an Intel audio driver, resulting in error messages and blue screens when upgrading to Windows 11. The affected drivers are listed under the name “Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST) Audio Controller”. system devices in the Device Manager to be found and have the internal designation IntcAudioBus.sys. Versions 10.29.0.5152 and lower and 10.30.0.5152 and lower are affected. Solution: Until the problem was finally resolved, Microsoft imposed a Windows 11 update stop for affected devices. • Snipping Tool and other inbox apps don’t start: Due to an outdated Microsoft certificate, some inbox apps such as the Snipping Tool, the on-screen keyboard, the voice input (voice typing), the emoji picker, the input method editor and the apps “First Steps” and Tips no longer start. Solution: There is a patch that should fix the problem.
• Incompatibility with Virtual Box: Microsoft has confirmed problems with Oracle Virtual Box and therefore imposed a temporary update lock (compatibility hold) for affected devices. The cause was an incompatibility with Windows Hypervisor and Hyper-V. Solution: Oracle has now fixed the problem. Install VirtualBox 6.1.28.
• Printer setup via HTTP: There were also problems when setting up network printers via HTTP connections. Solution: Install optional update KB5006746.
• Printer setup via IPP: Setting up network printers via the Internet Printing Protocol was also disrupted. Solution: Install optional update KB5006746.
• Print with default settings: In certain cases, print settings were incorrectly transmitted to the print server, so that the printouts were made with standard values. Solution: Install optional update KB5006746.
• Administrator rights for printing: Some users had to provide administrator credentials each time they printed. Solution: Install optional update KB5006746.
• Côc-Côc Browser: Freeware Vietnamese browser not starting on Windows 11 or causing other problems. The company therefore imposed a temporary update lock (compatibility hold) on affected devices until the problem was resolved. Solution: Install optional update KB5006746.
• Registry values ​​with special characters: In the course of investigating Côc Côc, it turned out that special characters (non-ASCII characters) in the program’s registry values ​​were responsible. According to Microsoft, the problem also affected other apps. Solution: Install optional update KB5006746.
• Problems with Intel’s Network Software Killer and VPNs: Anyone who uses Intel’s network software Killer had to accept a drop in speed under Windows 11. Compatibility issues caused UDP packets to be lost. This led to delays in transmissions over this protocol. The same may have happened with VPN programs based on the UDP protocol. Solution: Microsoft fixed the October patch day bug on October 12, 2021 with update KB5006674.
• High system load: Some users report high memory utilization and the resulting performance losses. Windows Explorer is to blame. Solution: Install optional update KB5006746.

In addition to the official problem reports from Microsoft, third-party manufacturers keep providing information about possible bugs in connection with Windows 11. These do not lead to an update lock, but affected users should wait until the problems are fixed before switching to Windows 11:

• Stuttering AMD processors: Although Microsoft fixed the performance problems with Ryzen CPUs (see above), owners of AMD processors continued to complain about performance losses such as stuttering and sound disturbances. The cause has now been found: As AMD has confirmed, there is increased memory access to its TPM 2 module fTPM under Windows 11. These can bring the system to a standstill for a short time so that it no longer reacts to inputs. Solution: AMD is working on a BIOS update that should fix the problem. This should be available in early May 2022. As an interim solution, AMD recommends switching to a hardware TPM module for those affected, but points out possible problems with active TPM encryption functions in connection with the necessary deactivation of fTPM. If you don’t use BitLocker or Windows Hello, you can simply disable fTPM. • Conexant audio driver: As with Windows 10, there are issues with Conexant audio drivers that prevent upgrading to Windows 11. Solution: There is a workaround.
• USB printer: The printer manufacturer Brother warns of problems under Windows 11 in a support document. According to this, 92 laser and inkjet printers refuse to work if they are connected to the computer via USB. Or they are simply not recognized.
