Microsoft is expanding its screen capture tool, Snipping Tool, with a new feature that allows users to record screen sessions.
The new screen recording feature is rolling out to select Windows Insiders in the Dev channel, but it will reach more Insiders before finally coming to Windows 11 for mainstream users. The updated version of the app with screen recorder is version 11.2211.35.0.
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool app is native to Windows 11, along with the Calculator, Mail, and Calendar apps. They are called Inbox Apps at Microsoft.
A tool acclaimed by Windows fans
In this app, the screen recording button with its own video camera icon sits next to the original capture button. Users can also choose a part of the screen to focus on before the recording session begins. Recorded content can then be previewed before being saved or shared.
Dave Grochocki, Senior Product Manager for Windows Inbox Apps, notes that the preview feature has a few bugs, including “a slight delay between when you click ‘Start’ and when recording begins.” Also, the tool window does not reset when starting a new capture from the application.
The screenshot tool is a favorite with Windows fans testing out Microsoft’s Windows 11 Dev and Beta channel previews.
The tool can be launched from a keyboard using the shortcut Win + Shift + S. It also offers rectangular mode, window mode, full screen mode and freeform mode. A few years ago on Windows 10, Microsoft toyed with the idea of changing the name of the Snipping Tool to Screen Sketch and then to Snip & Sketch. But the tool eventually reverted to its original name.
Microsoft hasn’t said whether the new recording feature will be available to Windows 10 users.
